- Steven F. Gruel is the founder of his own firm located in San Francisco, California. After serving for 15 years as a federal prosecutor, he now focuses his practice on criminal defense and business litigation, and also represents clients in personal injury, tax and immigration matters, and other issues. Representing clients throughout the San Francisco area as well as other parts of California, Texas and Wisconsin, Mr. Gruel is also a licensed private investigator in the state of California.After graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1985, Mr. Gruel began his legal career with a Madison, Wisconsin, litigation firm before joining the U.S. Department of Justice in 1987. He first worked with Immigration and Naturalization Service (now U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) and then moved to the United States Attorney's office and joined the United States Organized Crime Strike Force. In 2002, he became the acting chief of the Organized Crime Section and rose to Chief of the Major Crimes Section for the Northern District of California. Mr. Gruel is admitted to practice before all state courts in Wisconsin and California as well as before the Supreme Court of the United States. He represents clients accused of misdemeanors and felonies at the state and federal level, including white collar crimes and homicide. Mr. Gruel has represented international corporations, public officials and celebrities as well as less high-profile clients. He serves as president of two corporations with business ventures in Brazil.During his tenure as a federal prosecutor, Mr. Gruel received numerous professional awards. These include multiple letters of commendation from two different directors of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. In 2004, California Lawyer magazine named Mr. Gruel one of its "Attorneys of the Year."
