Julia Sherwin is a civil rights trial lawyer and partner at Haddad & Sherwin LLP in Oakland, California, where she represents individuals in wrongful death and serious injury cases against governmental entities and corporations. Ms. Sherwin represents clients in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout Northern California.Ms. Sherwin has handled numerous high-profile, cutting edge cases that have created extensive reforms in various areas of the law, including First Amendment issues, civil rights, constitutional law, police misconduct and wrongful death. She handled the first case in the country to find that administrative law judges have a First Amendment right to make decisions free of outside pressure. She obtained injunctive relief creating the State of California's first mandatory training and curriculum for public schools to combat homophobia in the classroom, in a case that also struck down a public school's ban on controversial speech in the classroom as unconstitutional. After four and a half years of litigation and completing the first week of an estimated eight-week trial, she obtained the largest civil rights wrongful death settlement in California history at the time ($8.3 million), plus sweeping injunctive relief throughout the State of California requiring the nation's largest correctional healthcare corporation (Corizon Health, Inc.), to stop violating the law and start having qualified nurses or higher level care providers conduct all patient assessments, instead of uncredentialed LVN's.Ms. Sherwin is the Vice-President of the National Police Accountability Project (NPAP, www.npapjustice.org), and a former Lawyer Representative to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and Northern District of California Judicial Conferences. As a Lawyer Representative, she organized the "Civil in Name Only" CLE at the 2013 Judicial Conference and provided model professionalism guidelines for consideration by the Court, which resulted in the Court adopting its Guidelines for Professional Conduct (http://www.cand.uscourts.gov/professional_conduct_guidelines). She is a member and Past Board Member (2007) of the Consumer Attorneys of California, a member of the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association (SFTLA), and Past President (2007) of the Alameda Contra Costa Trial Lawyers Association (ACCTLA). She also served as a board member for the Detroit chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and as a Barrister with the American Inns of Court.
