Charity S. Bird is a partner at Louisville-based Kaplan Johnson Abate and Bird LLP. Focusing her practice primarily on commercial litigation and bankruptcy, she provides assistance to business and individual clients throughout Kentucky in a variety of matters. Ms. Bird's background includes the representation of businesses and their owners in Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, and she has also represented debtors, creditors, creditors' committees and trustees in filings as well as litigation under other chapters of the Bankruptcy Code. Her practice has also encompassed financial workouts, collections, foreclosures, lien enforcement, and other commercial matters.Ms. Bird was the chair of the Bankruptcy Section of the Louisville Bar Association when it received the Section of the Year award from the LBA in 2013. Admitted to practice in both Kentucky and Georgia, Ms. Bird is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Western and Eastern Districts of Kentucky, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. Her successful track record has included obtaining pension liability relief for a nonprofit organization through the Chapter 11 process as well as the defense of several individual debtors against objections to discharge brought by creditors.Ms. Bird majored in criminal justice at Georgia State University and received a Bachelor of Science magna cum laude in 2001. Remaining in Atlanta, she pursued her legal education at Georgia State University College of Law, and she clerked for the United States Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Georgia before being awarded her Juris Doctor with honors in 2005. Ms. Bird's professional affiliations include having served as the chair of the Bankruptcy Law Section of the Kentucky Bar Association from June 2016 to June 2017.
